The Spirit is Building
St. Josesph

For the last several years the parish family of St. Joseph Church and School has experienced the joys of growth. The parish has grown with new members and activities, and with that growth has come the need for expansion.

In September of 2005 members of St. Joseph’s, in coordination with Fr. Paul Oborny, began the exciting process of determining what new needs for space had arisen. Since his arrival in August of 2006, Fr. David Lies has taken his place in that process which has progressed from ideas and hopeful visions to definite plans and a course of action to meet the requirements of the growing family of faith. The main additions of this project include a new, larger, parish hall, an adoration chapel and bell tower, remodeled parish and school offices, a new activity center and replacement classrooms and library/multimedia center.

The process has now arrived at the fundraising phase and the preparations for a capital campaign entitled, The Spirit is Building. Since the campaign was announced in January 2008, details of the plans for expansion and information to help parishioners determine what contributions they would make have been shared in mailings and announcements at Mass. April 6, 2008 is the official launch of The Spirit is Building campaign. Home Visitors will deliver pledge packets to parish households on that day and then return the following Sunday, April 13 to pick them up.

Plans for Interior Design Print
Written by Father David Lies

As mentioned in last week's bulletin (October 11), Fr. David and SJS principal Peggy Bahr met with architect Bob Faires and interior designer Kimberly Sondegard on Friday, October 8.  At this meeting, Kimberly presented three options of color schemes for carpeting, floor tile, and counter and cabinet laminates.  These color schemes and materials will eventually be incorporated in the new areas of expansion and renovation.  The option that seemed most favorable was one that tied in with the colors already existing in the church on the walls and tile work.  Both Fr. David and Mrs. Bahr sought colors that were warm and inviting and which would not be dated in several years.  After receiving input and suggestions, Kimberly would pursue more definite directions with color and materials.  More time was also spent discussing other fixtures for the new and remodeled areas such as light fixtures, door hardware and kitchen accessories.

Mr. Faires also received a favorable response from the McPherson City Planning Commission.  The city will allow St. Joseph to plan water retention areas for the new structures only and not for pre-existing structures.  This will provide a notable savings in expense for the excavation work that would have had to have been done.  With this issue resolved, work on preparing the blueprints and specifications for the project will continue.

Gradual Progress on Architectural Plans for Expansion Print

Continued work on the architectural plans and specifications for St. Joseph's renovation and expansion project are moving ahead slowly but surely.  Project architect Bob Faires of Howard and Helmer architects has estimated that plans will be completed by the first of November.  Several factors have led to the extra time involved with completing the plans begun by former architectet Andy Steffes.

First, Mr. Faires discovered that there were a few more details that needed to be added to the architectural drawings than he expected.  He is working to finish the plans from where Mr. Steffes had left off.  Secondly, it was necessary to establish new contracts with the various engineers who have been working on the project.  Before those new contracts with Howard and Helmer architects were established, further work could not continue.  Finally,  Mr. Faires has had to enter discussions with the McPherson City Planning Comission to plan for drainage, run-off, and water retention that would be created by not only the new structures added with the expansion but with the existing structures, as well.  Having to design water retention areas for the current structures has protracted the planning time for the project as a whole.

At the time of this writing, Mr. Faires will be meeting with Fr. David and members of the Parish Building Committee on Friday afternoon, August 28 to discuss the current status of planning.  New details will be shared in the bulletin and on the parish website as they are made available.

The Reasons for a Bell Tower and Adoration Chapel Print
Written by Father David Lies

During the course of designing the parish expansion, as well as during fundraising efforts, a question that has been raised several times has been regarding the addition of the bell tower and adoration chapel.  Why are these parts of the expansion being included now, when it seems there are more important parts, such as the addition of new classrooms and the complete enlarging of the parish hall?  Compared to these spaces, a bell tower and adoration chapel don’t seem to be as necessary or useful.  So, why are they being included?

The first reason that they are part of the current project is that St. Joseph’s has received several significant contributions to the project that were designated for the construction of a bell tower and adoration chapel.  These parts of the project have mostly been funded by specific funds.  If they are not built, the funds cannot be used for other portions of the project.  This is at the request of the donors.

Secondly, the addition of the bell tower and adoration chapel are being included because they meet a very important spiritual need of our parish: the graces that come to parishioners through our worship of Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist.  As a Catholic people, we are also a Eucharistic people, and if our faith does not grow with this expansion, then it is not fulfilling its purpose.  If prayer and our growing relationship with God are as important as we say they are, then we are called to “put our money where our mouth is” and give priority to creating a more noble and sacred space to hold Eucharistic adoration.

Finally, the bell tower and adoration chapel have been welcomed with enthusiasm by many parishioners who saw the plans.  The building committee initially thought that they would be received less enthusiastically, but was surprised to learn the opposite was the case.  These elements of the new expansion have struck a chord of faith and pride with members of the parish, who desire to have a church that looks more distinctively Catholic in it’s architectural features.

In the end, Fr. David and the building committee tried to meet the needs and expectations of as many parishioners and parish groups as possible.  To do that completely is impossible.  Without a doubt, there will be parts of this project that seem lacking or superfluous in the opinions of some.  Nevertheless, much thought and consideration have gone into the plans as they currently stand.

Update on Parish Expansion Project Print
Written by Father David Lies

The latest step in moving ahead with our parish capital campaign, "The Spirit is Building" and with the expansion of the parish facilities occurred on Thursday, June 5th.  At 1:15 p.m. that afternoon, representatives of our parish met with the Diocesan Building Commission.  Representing St. Joseph's was Andy Steffes, project architect; Joe Schieferecke, Parish Building Committee; Marcel Tajchman, Parish Finance Council; and Peggy Bahr, St. Joseph School Principal.

The purpose of this meeting was to give our parish an opportunity to present the latest building designs with the Diocesan Building Commission (DBC).  The members of this commission reviewed the designs and offered their observations and input about the project.  It sounded as if our design was well received by the DBC and our parish representatives were able to offer answers and explanations as needed.

As of the date of this article, we are still awaiting a formal written response from the DBC to let us know how we may proceed with our project.  At the same time, we have revised a ten-year financial projection that we are to submit to the Diocesan Finance Office for review.  This projection will enable the diocese to determine the size of a loan they are willing to offer us to help us move ahead with construction.  As soon as we receive the letter from the DBC, then we will be able to forward the financial projection.  For the present, we wait patiently and prayerfully for the next step.

Please keep our efforts to expand in your prayers, particularly through the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of our parish and the universal Church.
